Early in my engineering career I worked as a researcher at Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) where I gained insight in electric power generation and distribution. TVA had nuclear, coal, natural gas fired and hydroelectric power generating units, all of which I became familiar with. The use of electronic devices and the potential for electric vehicles promise significant growth in the demand for electric energy. We must be proactive in aggressively positioning Wyoming producers to provide the majority of these power needs, and the producers must offer the most competitive rates. We have to continue to promote and protect our fossil fuel and mineral industries. To that end, the University of Wyoming must be involved in research for other uses of coal and the other fossil fuels. The ongoing carbon fiber research is just the beginning.
